Feature on Girls Gone By Publishing

Girls Gone By Publishers is a publishing venture run by Clarissa Cridland and Ann Mackie-Hunter. For more information about us, please click here.

We re-publish some of the most popular girls' fiction from the twentieth century, concentrating on those titles which are most sought after, and difficult to find on the second-hand market.

We use the complete and unabridged text from first editions (except in very rare cases when we cannot find a first edition), together with all the illustrations. All of our books come with at least one introduction by an ‘expert’ in the field, and most of them come with a publishing history including illustrations of all editions (these often make fascinating reading).

Our aim is to make these books available at affordable prices, and to make ownership possible not only for existing collectors but also for new collectors so that the survival of the books is continued. We also publish some new titles which fit into this genre.

We also have a programme of non fiction titles related to the genre. As a rule, these take a lot of editorial work, and thus have a long lead time from when we announce them to when they are published.

Clarissa Cridland

Clarissa has had over 25 years' publishing experience, and as well as running GGBP is a Priest, serving as Curate of Coleford with Holcombe. She was ordained Priest on 30th June 2007.

As well as reading theology, she reads and collects a number of children's authors, some of which are published by GGBP. Favourites include Dorita Fairlie Bruce, Elinor Brent-Dyer, Richmal Crompton, Monica Edwards, Lorna Hill, W E Johns, Elsie Oxenham and Noel Streatfeild.

Clarissa is responsible for the overall production of the GGBP books, and looks after typesetters, proof readers and dealers, as well as liaising with our printers and answering e-mails, putting together catalogues and news sheets, and supplying information to Gareth to update the website.

Ann Mackie-Hunter

Ann is a former teacher and, in addition to running GGBP, is a very active member of her local church and is a keen gardener and good cook.

Her great love is reading fantasy and regency romances but favourite children's authors whom she reads and collects include Dorita Fairlie Bruce, Elinor Brent-Dyer, Gwendoline Courtney, L M Montgomery, Elsie Oxenham and J K Rowling. She is also very interested in collecting Girls Own Papers and books with attractive dustwrappers.

Ann is responsible for all the GGBP orders (except those from dealers) which includes putting all forward orders onto databases, and dispatching all titles from stock, as well as answering all snail-mail, liaising with our book keeper and distribution manager, ordering stationery and stamps (we get through a huge amount!).

Below is a list of authors whose books are currently in print and available to purchase from us.

Please note the price code listed by each title. Prices are listed here.

If you would like to send a brief review of any of our published titles, which we could use on the website, and in our catalogues, please e-mail it to Clarissa (click here). To read reviews of many of our titles, click on the cover image and then look at the end of the information about the title.

Elinor Brent-Dyer's Copyright

In April 2006, Girls Gone By Publishers bought Elinor Brent-Dyer's copyright from Martina Rutherford. (Martina inherited the copyright from her mother, Chloe Rutherford, who inherited it from Phyllis and Sydney Matthewman to whom Elinor left it.) Martina approached GGBP about this in 2005 and it was a dream come true!

Our agreement with Martina covers the copyright in all EBD's works, whether published or not, except for those titles where Lutterworth Press hold the copyright (where we have a separate agreement with them for the rights).

We also took over the agreement which Martina had with HarperCollins with regard to the Chalet School books.

Margaret Biggs is our only writer of school stories originally published prior to 1960 who is still alive today. Not only did she speak at our conference in Warwick this August, but she has also written a new Melling book, Kate at Melling.

This is set about 12 years after the end of the series, and features Helen's daughter, Kate. We shall be publishing this once we have republished all the existing Melling titles, of which there are seven. So far we have published seven of them and we shall be publishing Kate towards the end of the year - we shall let you know when you can order these titles in due course.

If you have not discovered Melling, now is the time to do so. Melling is a weekly boarding school in Cambridgeshire, run by the gentle Miss Pickering, with two delightful families, the Laceys and the Blakes, providing its 'star' pupils. Because the school is weekly boarding, there is a lovely feeling of home life as well as of school.

Submitting stories for publication in Books Monthly: Basically, all you need do is e-mail it along and I'll consider it - it can be any length, if it's very long I'll serialise it, if it's medium-length I'll put it in as a novella, if it's a short story or a feature article it will go in as it comes. Payment is zero, I'm afraid, as I don't make any money from Books Monthly, I do it all for fun!
