The menu is self-explanatory - try it and see for yourselves. The magazine is arranged into three main sections, REVIEWS, FEATURE ARTICLES and STORIES, and NEW & COMING SOON TITLES. The latter section is a little like a bookshop where you can browse what's new for this month, but it is arranged by Publisher, as this is the easiest way for me to do it. Let me knowwhat you think...

If you were lucky, and you're a dad, you might have received a copy of this fantastic book on Father's Day! Neil Oliver, the historian from the smash BBC series COAST, retells the stories that inspired us to be better men during the last century. He laments... more

Amanda Greenslade is a fantasy writer, like me (except she's young enough to be my granddaughter, and therefore has time on her side!). Her ASTOR CHRONICLES look fantastic, and I hope it won't be long before she finds a publisher. In the meantime, there's an interview with Amanda in this issue, together with information on TALON, the first book in the series.

KELLEY ARMSTRONG's latest book, THE SUMMONING, is so good I had to give it joint book of the month in the fantasy section; Kelley never lets you down, and this is a terrific read, chilling and entertaining at the same time - don't miss it!

And don't forget to let me know what you think of this issue of BOOKS MONTHLY ~ you can e-mail me at editor@booksmonthly.co.uk

Last weekend the fourth INDIANA JONES movie smashed box office records with takings estimated to be in excess of £148m - there are lots more great new Indy books reviewed in this issue, see the Feature Articles and Stories menu above

All of the titles listed or reviewed in Books Monthly are available from the store. Click on the Amazon logo to check availability as many are not yet published.

Elinor Brent-Dyer: The New House at the Chalet School

Now available

New House is the book in which we meet Margot, Daisy and Primula Venables who have come from the killing climate in Queensland. Just how killing was this climate? An introductory article will discuss whether Elinor was right or not. We will be including the original four black and white plates by Nina K Brisley.

New House suffered from minor, frequent cuts when it was published in Armada paperback (just the sort of things we all love to read!).

Available from the Gateway Amazon store!

Mary Cadogan: Mary Carries On

Now available

Mary Cadogan is well known as one of the foremost commentators on girls’ fiction and popular culture. In this book, published to celebrate her eightieth birthday, she provides a wide-ranging, authoritative and entertaining look at girls’ school stories and other period fiction. Among the authors given individual articles are Dorita Fairlie Bruce, Enid Blyton, Elinor M Brent-Dyer, Elsie J Oxenham, LM Montgomery, and Richmal Crompton, while her more general themes include secret societies, feminism, Girl Guide fiction, and story papers. Mary’s meticulous research and critical appraisal combine with her warm and witty style to make this a truly absorbing read. Learn what she considers the almost perfect girls’ school story, where the Silent Three hid their robes, and why Amalgamated Press artists were supposed to show schoolgirls submerged to their armpits whenever swimming costumes were worn. ‘Mary Cadogan is our leading authority on popular children’s literature…she is a guide who knows her stuff, but wears her scholarship lightly. She writes with authority, charm, intelligence and an enthusiasm that is infectious. In every sense, she gets to the heart of the matter.’ Gyles Brandreth. Articles include: My Favourite Tomboys, The Heyday of the Girl’s Own Paper, Elinor at her Very Best, Angela Brazil – A Hundred Years On, The Cliff House Papers, Little Women and Women’s Lib, Enid Blyton and the World of School, The Girls’ Crystal. The book will extensively illustrated with pictures from books and story papers, and we shall be publishing in May - in time for Mary’s 80th birthday!

Available from the Gateway Amazon store!

3/4/08 - We plan to publish this title in June 2008. No Going Back is the title in which Tamzin and Merryon’s friendship changes, and deepens into something more. Monica Edwards dealt with this difficult subject in an incredibly sensitive way, writing about not only Tamzin and Merryon’s feelings, but also those of Rissa and Roger, and how the new relationship might affect their old ‘four-cornered’ friendship. Not only does it work in this book, but it does too for the remainder of the series. She was far ahead of her time, and yet this is still a book which fits seamlessly into the series. The book will have a brand new introduction by Shelley Edwards (Monica’s daughter) as well as an article by Joy Wotton.

3/4/08 - We plan to publish this title in June 2008. Due to popular demand this title (which was originally republished by Friends of the Chalet School in 2000) is being republished by GGBP. The new edition will have the original cover artwork by Nina K Brisley, and a short story by Adrianne Fitzpatrick as well as another introductory article.
